I haven't tried it recently but am prepared to have another go.

I'll just start with a clean slate.

However, with so many successfully compiled systems out there and 
working, I really would like to join them.

I haven't been up long enough this morning to look into the video card 
driver suggestion of Chris Thompson, but thanks, Chris, for the suggestion.
