I've only removed applications that aren't needed on the machine which installed by default (games, OpenOffice, etc.).  Xastir was compiled from source obtained via CVS.

I run xastir on Debian Etch with kernel 2.6.18-3 and KDE desktop. I 
don't normally run with bulletins on and I don't do much map swapping. I 
haven't observed any problems.

Xastir runs about 0.3% processor, rising to 0.7% occasionally.

I've just turned bulletins on to see what happens.
