Neville, I believe you need to add the ampersand character after the
command to start festival to get the prompt returned to the terminal
screen. Below are the two commands I use to start festival and xastir -
you could script them I suppose but I don't bother.

[fred at localhost ~]$ xastir &
[2] 16555
[fred at localhost ~]$
