[Xastir] Having trouble with interface control

Hello I am a beginner user on Ubuntu 8.10. I install Xastir from synaptic and cannot open interface control tab.
This opens and I select serial kiss tnc, but not much else is working. Would appreciate some help. kd5mkv/steve
