Oh sure, they both have their limitations (though the D710 at least has the advantage of upgradable firmware unlike it's older sibling). But I think this feature would have been available on any simple text interface. Take a regular radio with a TNC and attach a HamHUD or something similar and you still have the equivalent process: view the raw packet in a small screen. It's just that I happen to have two D700s and a D7A so that's what I'm used to.

Yeah, I noticed that on the APRS SIG mailing list. I haven't had my Xastir system back up since I moved (still working out some issues with heat in the room) so I didn't notice it had been switched off until it was mentioned. Of course that also spawned a nice war over services, replication, release of code, etc.
