Here is an interesting page for some Linux GIS programs and how they set the
styles for the Tiger 2008 shape files:

Subject: [Xastir] More Tiger maps questions

Hi guys,

Making progress on customizing the Tiger/Line maps with the dbfawk
files. I managed to color the "secondary" roads with the RED color.
These are non county, city street and freeway roads. I also was
wrong when I said I needed county borders. They are there, but I'd
like to change them from black to grey and thicken the line a bit.
Still looking for that attribute.

Questions:

1. Where does one find a list of the color codes for the dbfawk
files? I used the "shotgun" approach to find the RED color. I must
be overlooking it somewhere.

2. Anyone right off know which shapefile contains the county border
lines?

3. Anyone know which shapefile contains the background color (looks
like light-grey) for the maps? I'd like to change to white.

I've had one person ask if I'd share the dbfawk files. Sure. I got
them from Craig, N6YXK. He got them from Richard, N6NKO. I simply
changed the field (dbfinfo) line and in some cases the secondary road
color (edges). I'd like to find the background and county border
data so I can change them, too. Let me tweak a bit more before sharing.
