[Xastir] Xastir and Kenwood RC-D710

I recently got a Kenwood RC-D710 that I have hooked up with my Icom 
IC-2820 and it works great.  Now I am going to hook up my laptop and use 
Xastir.

I have the serial cable to connect the RC-D710 to a 9-pin serial cable.  
Are there any pitfalls I need to consider before I start working on this 
tonight?

I am hoping to get everything all up and working before the weekend.  I 
am going into the backwoods this weekend with friends and they want to 
see APRS in action.
