I don't think I did the most recent Hardy VM, but regardless, without
even looking at it I know I never install libgeotiff from the Ubuntu
repositories.  Proj is another matter.  Haven't the installation notes
for Ubuntu always instructed the user to install proj from the
repositories?  I'm fairly sure of that, and that is what was done in
the VM.

Checking the VM, it is as I expected - libgeotiff is in usr/local/lib,
but libproj is in usr/lib.

I'm fairly sure proj was installed before geotiff (if I built it).
However, it was installed via repo's before running the get-maptools
script to get geotiff.
