[Xastir] Serial port issues with Xastir on OS X

I built Xastir on OSX 10.6.4 from CVS synchronized on 08/19/10. Upon 
starting an interface involving a serial device (standard or KISS TNC), 
the interface mysteriously disappears from the list and Xastir hangs 
indefinitely. The underlying serial device is a USB-RS232 adapter using 
a PL2303 chipset.  It works correctly with a standard terminal 
application for communicating with the TNC which eliminates any 
potential issues with permissions.  Can anyone else confirm this issue 
and/or provide a workaround?
