[Xastir] Soundmodem recognized by Xastir, not receiving

I have loaded Xastir 1.9.9 on a RECEIVE only basis. I have loaded
Soundmodem 0.15. I want to monitor the traffic in the receive only mode.
Still working on getting a good location before going live (xmit and rcv).

I am running Lubuntu 10.04. Xastir loaded just fine, working with the
OSM maps and was able to line up Soundmodem. I have tried this in both
AX25 and MKISS. Everything seems on the up and up. I have a scanner fed
into the sound card and when I release the squelch and monitor the scope
(diagnosis in soundmodemconfig), I can see it is receiving sound. I had
to get to the mixer settings (Gnome mixer) to adjust the volumes on the
mic input but it is receiving. I can dissiminate the difference between
noise and a receivded signal.

Soundmodem seems to be working and Xastir seems to be working. I am not
sure if Soundmodem is sending the signal to Xastir because evertime a
signal is sensed, xastir never seems to decipher it. I got to thinking
about the Slot and persistance settings and wondered if I should change
that?

By the way, the computer is an older pentium, 366 with 192 MB ram. Could
the speed of the machine slow it down to a point where the squelch, when
it opens, doesn't give it time for xastir to get it? Could the signal
coming from the scanner be kerchunking it where the signal is received
but the squelch opens too late for the complete signal to come through?
