I've had a number of problems with KDE4 running programs I was running under 
3.5 and I agree the layout is "different" (read: rubbish).
Thankfully, my dabbling has been within VirtualBox so apart from a lot of 
frustration and grey hairs, no real damage was done.
Once my Kubuntu 8.10 install runs out of support, I will becoming a Gnome 
user. Shame really 'cause I liked the way KDE did things and I was really 
comfortable there.
