Getting the libtiff/proj.4/libgeotiff compile working (and in the
correct order) can be a bit of a pain.  They certainly don't make it
easy on us sometimes.

If you follow the instructions in the "INSTALL" file carefully you
should be able to get it going, but this may entail
upgrading/downgrading libtiff on your box, which may affect other
apps that depend on libtiff.  Tread carefully if you must mess with
libtiff versions.

If you only have to mess with proj.4 and/or libgeotiff versions,
very few applications depend on these (generally none) so you're
free'er to do what you wish to get things running.
