This is a Fink problem and/or a matching problem between Automake
and Autoconf tools that the Fink people will have to solve
permanently. It's not an Xastir problem. It could potentially
affect many different applications that depend on automake/autoconf
during their builds (thousands of open-source apps).

Do you mean the "--with-quantum-depth" configure flag you pass to
GraphicsMagick, or do you mean what bit-depth you're running on your
X11 server?

Tom checked in a change to Xastir-CVS that fixes the quantum-depth
problem with GM where it would display black images for maps.

What bit-depth are you running your X11 server at? I generally run
mine at 16-bits (65,536 colors).

"xdpyinfo" is one tool that can tell you a lot about your X11
server.

If I look at my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file I see this:

     Section "Screen"
       DefaultDepth 16
