Initially I was going to agree with you completely. But this is not totally true. Xastir won't compile with certain versions of automake. To be most correct then, it should do a version check to ensure the correct version is installed. On my end I have a work-around fix that I'm implementing. As I've posted here before, I update Xastir via a script. I've added a step in that script to install the latest automake version (1.11) which seems to work fine. This isn't the best solution, but it'll get what I need done and so I'm doing it.
