A frequently updated item on my system, that may other packages depend upon, is gettext which wants automake 1.5 to be installed. Automake 1.5 was released in August 2001 (older than your specified 5-6 years). Automake 1.6 was released in March 2002. Why gettext should keep insisting on such an old product is beyond me, but it does. So frequently when I do updates that depend on gettext, I get "downgraded" to automake 1.5. Whenever one version of automake is installed, another is removed, as only one can be present. I only have two versions of autoconf available to me and the newest is presently installed. But I've not seen it get updated at any point.

In any case, I have a solution that works for me. I just thought I'd propose a more complete solution. Since I don't contribute to the coding then this is as far as I want to take it. You all do such a great job that I have no grounds for complaint.

Thanks.
