I missed the start of the discussion, it sounds like you have kiss operational,  but what have you configured in your /etc/ax25/axports file?

i.e here is mine
#1	OH2BNS-1	1200	255	2	144.675 MHz (1200  bps)
#2	OH2BNS-9	38400	255	7	TNOS/Linux  (38400 bps)
1200  	EI7IG-7         38400   255     2       Mkiss 1200 baud port

and my interface
j0n at mini-itx:~$ ifconfig ax0
ax0       Link encap:AMPR AX.25  HWaddr EI7IG-7

In Xastir I tell it to use "1200" as my interface name as that is what the ax25 interface is called.
