Yes ... you originally said that the X process was killed "after 2
seconds Ubuntu restart and I have to log on again." This observation
was key.

No program, not even Xastir, should ever be able to do this, unless
there is a bug in the X driver.

It's nice to see you got a lot of help from people thinking it was an
Xastir problem, 22 messages in the thread. ;-) But ultimately the help
proved even further that the problem was not in Xastir. This is good,
and expected. Man with hammer think all problems are nails.

Assuming the presence of such a bug; yes, other applications would be
affected, and that's probably why you see other reports from other
people who do not use Xastir.

Possible, but unlikely. It is more likely that a change made to the
driver was not properly tested on T40, or there was no opportunity to
test.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.

I felt the noise was useful all the same. Don't be disheartened.

There is a possibility that this bug is already fixed, and you would
have to apply software updates in Ubuntu 10.04 in order to get the fix.

There is also a possibility that this bug is known but not fixed.

So I searched bugs.ubuntu.com for T40 for you, and found a few possible
bugs that you should keep watch on:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/374780 "thinkpad
t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes - needs blacklisted in
compiz" ... is relevant if you have that sort of graphics card.

There are a few related bugs that have since been fixed, including
#444139.

There is yet also a final possibility that this bug is unknown to
Ubuntu, in which case it might never be fixed, or the fix might be
handled by Xorg project and released in a later Ubuntu release.
