Apt-get installs ubuntu's pre-packaged version, which is 1.9.4, in
ubuntu's standard directory structure.

When you compiled from source, the install script sticks xastir under /
usr/local/bin. Because this directory isn't in your path, you need to
prefix the path before running xastir or add that directory to your
path.

You'll want to apt-get remove xastir again, and then run /usr/local/
bin/xastir to start up the compiled version.
