I had to read more of your message to figure out what you were
interfacing: A TinyTrak4.

Your e-mail was very specific to a TT4. KISS protocol does not
specify amplification settings or similar. The reason you weren't
able to find much out about setting amplification for KISS mode is
because the only place to find such information would be on the TT4
list. The amplification setting and testing has no application to
any other TNC's.

Everybody else's KISS mode works like this:

*) Put the TNC into KISS mode with some command. On old TNC's it
was an entire sequence of commands, but anything made in the last 10
or 15 years is usually something like "KISS ON" and then a carriage
return.

*) Tell the program to use KISS mode (or perhaps operating system if
using Linux AX.25 kernel networking), and which serial port to use.

*) Optional: The program or OS may send a few commands that most
TNC's in KISS mode can use to set parameters. This is done via
special KISS packets. Parameters like:

     p-persist
     slottime
     txd
     taildelay

Some TNC's won't accept parameter settings, like the TNC-X. It uses
a pot to set TXD.
