[Xastir] Link two XASTIR boxes through the internet?

A while back, a buddy told me that when I finally had a more current version of XASTIR up and running, we could run a direct link to each others stations and essentially gate each area's traffic to each other.  Is this a possibility with XASTIR and if so, how difficult is it to set up?
