[Xastir] Fwd: help

Hi Steve,

Are you referring to the aprx manual? Software like aprx (or aprsg,
ldsped, etc.) is not everyone's cup of tea - mainly involves editing a
text configuration file to set things up. That's kind of the bread
and butter of the Linux world, though.

Based on Tom's input that Xastir will gate messages from IS to RF,
which is the desired behavior, I'm not sure why in previous posts the
developers seem to discourage using Xastir as an IGate. Below is a
quote from that message.

  > INET->RF only gates to RF messages that are directed from a station heard

As far as I know Xastir gates RF to IS fine, and if it does the above,
then I'm not sure why it's reported as being so limited as an IGate
that people should use something else such as JavAPRSIGate. Based on
the recommendation to use something else, I first used aprx - got it
sharing the TNC with Xastir via AX25. Then I added ldsped, which was
cool because it let me share the TNC with apps on other computers on
the wireless network. Next I added APRSIS32 under Wine, and most
recently I shut aprx down and let APRSIS32 be the IGate. It's ldsped
that brings TNC sharing to the table with APRSIS32 in Linux. It's fun
having the capability to run Xastir and APRSIS32 side by side on the
same machine with both having access to the same TNC. I've thought
about trying out JavAPRSIGate, but I'm not sure what makes it better
than Xastir (or APRSIS32) as an IGate.
