Someone here on the list *has* built Xastir on Arch Linux, and even worked
on making a package for it.  Most of the headaches he had related to it 
were exactly issues that have been fixed in the last two releases, so it should
pretty much be a slam dunk as long as you can get the associated third-party
libraries and dev packages installed first.
