Right.  Don't use auto-maps.

Map->Configure->Index: Reindex ALL Maps

Map->Map Chooser
     Expand Dirs (Toggle at top)
     Clear (Button at bottom)
     Highlight Online/OSM_tiled_mapnik.geo
     Apply (Button at bottom)

When using the OSM maps, hit F4 to go to a nearby zoom level that will make the labels easy to read (each time after you zoom).
