[Xastir] make install / menus

Long-standing question: do linux distros follow a common convention in
their menu file structure?
When mandrake/mandriva installs got altered by structure change in
(image) magick, I migrated to (k)ubuntu. With gui tools to set up menus,
this was quite easy, if time-consuming. I am now using a Raspberry Pi -
like (?)ubuntu, debian-based - and basic xastir install is easy (from
..deb in repository). The GUI menu item for xastir comes up under "other"
however, an already-crowded list, and with no icon. Changing this is
quite difficult given there is no gui menu-editor tool (well, not that I
can find anyway).
I set up kubuntu with xastir (built from cvs - easy with the build
script, thanks!) under a fresh sub-menu of "Amateur Radio" with its own
icon (from /usr(/share)/xastir/symbols). I still haven't found an
appropriate icon for the sub-menu though, and it's still a pain entering
the description details.
....returning to the question: can all this be part of 'make install'?

hopefully helpfully,
