[Xastir] demo station mapping cached maps

Hi
I'm building a station to demo at a radio rally this Sunday - info here
http://www.midcars.org/ to represent our Linux User Group (Shropshire Lug).
I'm in England UK. NOT the US.

I would like to show OSM maps on the PC running on Xastir on a Mint Linux
box
- its only got a 20Gig HDD in it and I would prefer not to use mobile
broadband (there may not be a signal there anyway!)

So can anyone tell me how - if I set up Xastir running with OSM maps at
home - can I save the maps and if so can I get Xastir to see them again -
I've never had any luck in the past when attempting to do OSM offline.

I know I could download the maps - but the files are bigger than the PCs
HDD <sigh!> I had read the Xastir page on this but as I am in the UK - the
US help doesn't really help me.
