Xastir should configure/build just fine with Motif if Motif -libs and -devel packages are installed;  With LessTif if the Lesstif -libs and -devel packages are installed.  It should be just a matter of tweaking the .deb package to spell out different dependencies.  I don't mess with DEB packages so wouldn't be the one fixing it.

For RPM packages it would be the *.spec.in files that would need to change (not directly relevant to this thread, but an example of a "package" file).

On OpenSUSE-12.1 I have these RPM files installed, which make Xastir compile with Motif instead of Lesstif:

   openmotif-devel-2.3.2-8.1.3.x86_64
   openmotif-libs-2.3.2-8.1.3.x86_64

I hope that helps the Debian package maintainer to figure out the fixes for his .deb package.
