IIRC, I've done something like pan around to pre-load the OSM cache,
then copy the cache files out to a maps directory (so they don't get
expired from the cache).

In addition to caching, there's a function to set your soon level
steps to match the OSM zoom levels.  It definitely helps with how the
maps look, not sure if it helps with the number of maps downloaded.
