My old MAP60 is waterproof (IPX7) and runs all day on a couple of AAs. 

My experience using an iPad as a standalone GPS has been frustrating - glad that's not why I bought it. It's pretty much useless without a network connection to get online maps (I have not tried any pay apps for offline navigation, haven't seen any that look worth buying).
