Bingo :-) It's working on Ubuntu Mint 17.3, (I will check later if LMDE 
2 Betsy works)

This line
sudo apt-get install cvs autoconf automake lesstif2-dev imagemagick gv 
libxp-dev libxpm-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev

Replace    lesstif2-dev  with   libmotif-dev

Then in this line:
sudo apt-get install gpsman gpsmanshp libpcre3-dev proj libproj-dev 
libdb4.8-dev python-dev libax25-dev

skip Proj, not been able to find a replasement and before you run the 
line, do as described on this page to get the libdb4.8-dev installed 
from an archive

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/i386/libdb4.8-dev/download
