I'm no Xastir expert so take what I say with a grain (or two) of salt.

I believe that the latest CVS version is what you should be using and
once you have followed the instructions provided to set up and install
using CVS it is very simple to keep it updated. Just run the
"update-xastir" script provided in the xastir directory/folder.
