Curt

Could you point me to where I can turn on map caching? I’ve looked everywhere and must have missed it.

Thanks.

The only problem though is that my internet connection is not very fast and zooming and panning when using online maps is not very smooth as a result. I would prefer to use offline maps. I downloaded Ontario-latest.osm.pbf but I imagine one needs to do further processing on that before using it because it does not show up in Map Chooser. I will investigate a bit further using your suggested reading to see how I can implement offline mapping.

Make sure you have map caching enabled for one. You must have the correct libraries installed when you compile & use Xastir for that to take effect. It's not a perfect solution, but it helps in some cases. If you want to run totally offline though, don't bother with it and see the next paragraph.

You might want to read README.MAPS to see some of the other options available. If you're after vector maps, I'd suggest looking around for OSM extracts in ESRI Shapefile format. Xastir handles those nicely and very fast. I used to use Cloudmade OSM Extracts but I'm not sure whether those are still available. Here's a place you can read about that type of map:
