[Xastir] FW: xfontsel

Hi Tom

These are the messages that caused xastir to fail.   I did reboot the pi before running xastir so all processes should have stopped at that time.

x_spider: Can't bind local address
Could some processes still be running from a previous run of Xastir?
Error: BindingCould some processes still be running from a previous run of Xastir?
UDP_Server process died.
x_spider: Couldn't set read-end of pipe_udp_server_to_xastir non-blocking
Could some processes still be running from a previous run of Xastir?
festival_client: connect to server failed

SayText: Couldn't open socket to Festival

XReadBitmapFile() failed: Bitmap not found? /usr/share/xastir/symbols/2x2.xbm
XReadBitmapFile() failed: Bitmap not found? /usr/share/xastir/symbols/2x2.xbm

It seems that the fatal error has to do with the mapping.  The gui xastir map does not open and the terminal window just sits there.

Any ideas?

Tom,

I just spent a enjoyable almost hour on the phone with Joe VA3JLF. He now is running Xastir from source code but is still getting some errors which as near as I can tell are pi based; they are not ones I have had experience with; and both of us had cell phone batteries that were almost empty.

I have also pointed him at some of the Wiki's.

Joe VA3JLF, the main Wiki that you should look at is at https://xastir.org/index.php/Main_Page and is the root for all information Xastir related. Otherwise ask a question here on the reflector if you can not find a answer in the archived messages. (We promise not to bite, although some may bark a bit, ;-) )

Hi Tom

Please help me because I am a bit confused.  I did not ???configure and compile??? xastir.  I did a sudo apt-get install xastir.  Also, I do not have an xastir directory, although there is a hidden directory in my home directory.  However there is no config.h in there.
As well, I don???t know if the x11 utils were installed at xastir install time because it would all have been during the apt-get install process.  I can slick in the different font windows but the xfonstel buttons remain greyed out.

Well, that means that whoever created the xastir package for the system
did so without x11-utils being installed, and therefore created a binary that
will have disabled xfontsel buttons.

Is there another way of installing xastir other than what I did?

Yes, compile it from source.  That's the preferred way, because system package
repositories almost always lag too far behind, and most only include released
versions of Xastir.  It has been quite a long time since we've actually done
a real release, most of us are working directly out of the git repository.

This would be your only choice to get xfontsel working on this system.  Or
pester whoever made the package to rebuild it with x11-utils installed, and
make x11-utils a required package for xastir.

Hi Jason

I tried to install x11-utils but it looks like I already have it loaded.  It says that my version is the latest. The xfontsel buttons are still greyed out.

Xastir must be able to find xfontsel at *configure* time in order for the
xfontsel buttons to be enabled.

If you configured and compiled xastir before installing x11-utils, you'll
have to redo it to enable this feature.

You can check to see if configure found xfontsel by grepping for "XFONTSEL"
in your config.h file (located at the top of your build directory).  If
it doesn't say:

/* Define if you have xfontsel */
#define HAVE_XFONTSEL 1

but instead says
/* Define if you have xfontsel */
/* #undef HAVE_XFONTSEL */

then you must re-run configure, and recompile/reinstall.

Hi

I am running xastir on my Stretch pi and have a question about changing fonts.  I did look around the archives and googled but I still cannot get xfontsel to work.  I choose configure|fonts and the fonts window opens up and all the xfontsel buttons on the right hand side are greyed out.  I tried to do an apt-get install xfontsel but that didn???t work either.  What am I doing wrong or is this another problem with Stretch????

sounds like you may not have the x11-utils package loaded. xfontsel is
no longer part of the default distribution on many distros.
