OK Curt,
I had not started any configs so it was easier to delete the .xastir directory and restart xastir from the /usr/bin/local directory. This time I did not get any errors (!). When I go to Map Chooser, I see two online directories and I chose geogratis.gc.ca but the map does not display. I see stations but no map. I looked in the map folder and there are maps in there.

If you're just getting started and haven't done a lot of Xastir config'ing yet... Delete your ~/.xastir directory, then re-start Xastir. It will rebuild that directory with the correct paths for your new install.
You could also rename .xastir to .xastir-save or similar and restart Xastir, then copy bits and pieces from your .xastir-save/* files into your .xastir/* directory as needed.
