[Xastir] Position transmit timing

Hi Brett

I have a webpage logged into aprs.fi and at the exact moment that the tx appears in the display packet data window, the aprs.fi refreshes the “last wx report” and “last position report”, so I am pretty certain that the two are connected. The data in the view packet data window are exactly 30 mins apart – I can tell because I set xastir to print the time as well as the position and weather.

I have both the rf and aprs port open in xastir. If I close the aprs port in xastir, aprs.fi does not get updated. (I haven’t figured that out yet, whether that means that what I am getting to aprs.fi through my own open port, rather than via the transmit). The path on aprs.fi appears to support that theory since it shows the packet going straight to the internet.

I am using a tnc-pi2. The tnc does not have any transmit function on its own, it needs the software to transmit. If I manually transmit by pressing the transmit now button in xastir, the packet appears on the view incoming window as it is transmitted (with a TX at the beginning of the line). Aprs.fi shows the position being updated but not the weather report. I surmise that pressing the transmit now button causes xastir to send only a position report, not a weather report as well.

How are you verifying the 30 minute transmit interval? If it is being
observed on RF, does this match what is shown as being sent by Xastir? I
don't have access to Xastir at the moment but I believe it is at {View |
Incoming Data}.

Is it possible the TNC is causing the transmit rather than Xastir? What TNC
are you using? If you manually transmit from the Xastir menu does it behave
as expected?

Hi Dave

Thanks for the tip. I tried it but it made no difference. The tnc still
transmits at 30 min intervals, no matter the setting.

I did start xastir as non-root ( i.e. xastir &) or should it be sudo (sudo
xastir &)?

Joe,

Make the changes you want...

Then { File | Configure | Save Config Now! }...

Then Quit Xastir...

Then Start Xastir...

Observe if changes "stuck".

Hi all

I have xastir set to transmit position reports every 5 minutes
(Configure|Timing|Posit TX Interval). (5 minutes may be too often but I am
only using this temporarily for testing). I would like to set the timing
to every 15 minutes. However xastir is beaconing every 30 minutes
instead. I can’t see any other setting to change position timing. Why is
this? Am I missing something?

My station is configured as a weather station and my transmit option is
Station position, Zulu date-time and weather.

Thanks

Joe
