I've tried at least one extension, and generated an error when trying
to broadcast it, and haven't gone back to debug it.

I send the data out to APRSIS, collect it on return and broadcast that.
It doesn't answer your question, but with a working system I haven't
spent more time on why the obvious solution doesn't work.
