Not sure.  I don't think we've discussed this particular topic.
Doesn't matter much to me as I'm always running latest CVS, but I
suppose some users might think that even/odd stuff might indicate
the stable/less stable releases.  In our case so far they don't.
"stable" releases tend to be much less stable than the current
development releases due to bug fixes.

I'm glad somebody's checking into GDAL.  I've had it on my mind for
many months, but obviously not in the conscious part.
