It has to do with "test -c <filename>" functions in the "configure"
script.  One of these:

  test -c com1
  test -c /dev/cuaa0
  test -c /dev/ttyS0
  test -c /dev/cua/a

Once we find out which one(s) caused the hang on WinXP, we can code
around it.
