Correct.  At least that's the usual way to do it.

I started out writing "up" and "down" scripts that set up the
interfaces for me.  I had to run those manually when I wanted to
play.

Later I turned them into /etc/rc.d scripts and linked them into the
proper runlevel directories.  After that, whenever I started up the
system, the interfaces were up and running.
