You might also check to see if you have some weird stuff going on
with your modifier keys (scroll-lock, caps-lock, num-lock).
Sometimes those can keep things from working right.  Turn all of them off.

If this is the case, you might have some strange X11 setup files
having to do with your key mappings.

dbfawk should be enabled by default with the Xastir you have.  Check
config.log for the reasons why it didn't get compiled in.
