[Xastir] No decode delegate

can someone help me work out why i can't view any rastir maps?
I am getting this message from xastir:
xastir: No decode delegate for this image format 
(/usr/local/xastir/maps/nz/chch/ChchArea.bmp).
xastir: No decode delegate for this image format 
(/usr/local/xastir/maps/nz/chch/christchurch.bmp).

i have imagemagic in stalled, including the dev library.
(and it's working great from command line and from php)

i'm running mdk9.1 (with mostly 9.2 rpms).
