It's Knoppix Linux, bootable "live" Linux.

Depends on what filesystems they compiled into the kernel and/or
have loadable modules for on the CD.

It's PC-hardware running a bootable Linux CD, so you have to give it
some location where it can write, whether that be a hard disk
partition containing a filesystem it can write to, a floppy disk, a
USB flash device, whatever.
