[Xastir] Compile question

I am resuming the learning process for the CVS / new compile of Xastir.

I have an unusual situation and need some input.

I have Xastir on 2 computers running on MEPIS

Here are the systems

System 1

AMD K-6 500

256 RAM

Plenty of hard drive space.

*****************

System 2

AMD K-6 400

192 MB RAM 8MB devoted to shared video

6gb hard drive that support a triple boot setup using BootMagic

Partition 1 MS-dos 220 mb free will have APRSDOS AND DIGI_NED

Partition 2 Win98SE with Word, VIA-Voice, Airmail, TelPac, UI-View,
Street Atlas,
                 Mapsource, D-7 utility,
                 786 mb free

Partition 3 MEPIS Xastir 399 mb free

Partition 4 Linux swap

This system is working well despite my being told that it could not be
done. It is stable and functional. I would like to shrink the Linux /
Xastir partition if possible. There is a lot of stuff I have now need for
in the default MEPIS installation.

Would a better option be to delete Linux and use Cygwin? How stable is
this running under Win98?

Does anyone have any suggestions on what can be stripped from MEPIS as
unneeded?

Can I compile Xastir on system 1 and expect it to run on system 2? I don't
plan to include many extras on system 2 since I only use the Dos maps and a
limited set of shapefiles. I have an external 40gb HD that goes with the
system and I carry extra shapefiles there.

Is it possible to compile an Xastir executable and move it from one box to
the other when the processors are this close or will other hardware foul me up?

Other suggestions?

PS the first person who say "buy a better laptop" is on the hook for a new
one. ;)
