Don't forget the wonderful Debian Way (tm):

sudo apt-get build-dep xastir

Which should install all dependencies for building the version of xastir
that is in the repository (which appears to work for the latest xastir
versions). You'll need to enable the extra repositories first (universe and
multiverse I think). More info here:
