Ok.  Your X11 server tries to figure out which clocks are available
when it starts up.  Sounds like your video card sometimes reports
slightly different clock frequencies which don't match the higher
resolution lines you had, therefore it decides that it can't support
that resolution and jumps down to the ugly one.  Definitely an X11
server -> video card sort of problem, not an Xastir problem.
