[Xastir] No maps or apparent comm with kpc3

just a few setup issues i just cant seem to wrap my mind around.

one is that i'm not able to view any maps, i had xastir working under windows 
but since swaping to the Kubuntu Fiesty 7.04 machine am not able to see maps.

the other is i have not seen any traffic from the tnc, the recieve light comes 
on but no visible traffic on the screen. the com port selection is set 
to /dev/ttyS0 and set to enable on start up. is this not correct?
