Thanks, I've skipped GDAL so far.

Just got libtiff via fink then libgeotiff from source, so I think I'm
set for map formats. Did the USGS WA topo DRGs every get uploaded
somewhere public? I suppose I could walk to the WSU library and ask if
they have them...

I have not had problems with fink yet. My wiki how-to install guide
will use fink, although I'm not opposed to someone exchanging the fink
references to independent source builds. I'm just too lazy to build
everything manually.
