Good.  I'm using a TNC-X with either the AX.25 stack or more
commonly the Serial KISS TNC interface in Xastir.  Both seem to work
fine.

Not much chance of that.  One could certainly write code for their
hardware that was open-source though, using freely available tools.
It'd be quite a project in itself though, doing it from scratch.
