Microsoft Map Point covers Canada about as poorly as it does the USA.
(Okay, it's not that bad...)
Shapefiles from the Government of Canada, Topo bit maps, OSM tiles,
OSM generated shapefiles...
Right now we are in the process of importing GeoBase shapefiles from
the Government database into OSM, and will be working with GeoBase via
OSM to highlight areas of concern, if not providing data to the
government.
Have a look on the web for GeoBase, and also Toporama.

A source for shapefiles that contains updated (somewhat) info from TIGER
is:
http://downloads.cloudmade.com/
The Cloudmade group is working closely with the OSM (Openstreetmap.org)
to get these files updated with help from gps users. Areas of Europe
have seen great progress, but the USA/Canada is behind the curve. (I
understand that the state of Georgia has seen much active help from gps
users there.)
Besides the shapefile format, you can download maps that accommodate GPS
receivers for Garmin (.qpx), Tomtom, and others.
Just another place to look for maps... in various stages of accuracy...
