1) Are you using the xastir package from the ubuntu repository, or a
self-compiled one? If self-compiled, from what sources?
2) Which version of CanadaTopo are you selecting? 250k or 50k?
My screen turned black a week or so ago (on Ubuntu 8.10), but it turned
out to be the WMSRadar overlay, which mysteriously changed from black to
some near-black color for the background, and the .geo file no longer
treats it as transparent...
Play with your map layers. Set worldhi.map at some high layer, like
10000. Does it overlay your black screen? Are stations displayed over
the black background? How about grids?
When I select the Canadatopo250k, I get a map image. When I select the
CanadaTopo50k, I get no image, so I just see the default grey background.
The .geo files for these selections don't contain a URL, so I can't check
with a browser or wget if the server is up and functioning. It just may
be a problem with the 50k server, not on your end at all.
