On my OpenSuSE systems the serial ports are owned by "root" and
group "uucp", so I add my user to the "uucp" group.

Make sure to log out/log in again in order to gain the new access,
or use a shortcut that works in one xterm where you can then start
Minicom:

     su - <username>
     minicom
